The story of this place
Victor Harbor's granite island is connected to the mainland by the Horse Drawn Tramway causeway, built in 1882 and heritage-listed. The island features the granite pylon of the causeway, an historic screw-pile jetty and a resident colony of little fairy penguins that nest under the boulders. The causeway provides a dramatic leading-line composition with the ocean on both sides. Sunset from the causeway looking back towards the mainland provides warm light on the Victorian-era masonry. The island is accessed by a 600-metre walk across the causeway from the Victor Harbor foreshore.
