The story of this place
Undara Volcanic National Park contains one of the longest and most extensive lava tube systems in the world, formed approximately 190,000 years ago when a single lava flow travelled over 160 km from the Undara volcano. Where sections of the tube roof have collapsed, extraordinary cathedral-like spaces have been created with rainforest vegetation growing in the openings. Light shafts penetrate the tubes at collapse points, creating dramatic beam compositions. The largest tube sections are over 100 metres long and 30 metres wide. Guided tours access the tubes via installed walkways and staircases.
