The story of this place

Echo Point lookout at Katoomba delivers the definitive Three Sisters view — the trio of sandstone monoliths rising 900 metres above the Jamison Valley. The challenge for photographers is avoiding the tourist-packed lookout and finding compositions that feel original. The Honeymoon Lookout (300m west) gives a profile view of all three sisters in silhouette at sunrise. The Giant Stairway descent (1.5 hours) positions you at base level looking up at the formations. Blue hour at dawn produces the most saturation in the sandstone walls. The eucalyptus haze — from volatile oils released by millions of gum trees — creates the characteristic blue colour of the mountains.
