The story of this place
Sydney Observatory is one of the oldest scientific institutions in Australia, and its domed silhouette against a city-lit night sky creates a compelling astrophotography composition. The copper dome and Victorian-era building contrast with the modern city glow behind. The parkland of Observatory Hill provides elevated clearance from street-level light pollution. While the city's light pollution prevents deep-sky imaging, the Milky Way's core is visible in late summer from around midnight on moonless nights. The bridge's illumination and ferry wakes create long-exposure light art below. The telescope dome can be captured with a 14–20mm lens encompassing both the dome and sky above.
