The story of this place

The Sydney Observatory's distinctive time ball dropped at exactly 1 PM each day, allowing ships in the harbour to set their chronometers accurately and navigate safely through treacherous waters. Built on the site of Fort Phillip (constructed 1804-1806 but never fired a shot), the observatory began time ball operations in 1858. For over a century, captains would watch for that ball to drop—knowing that those seconds being exactly right could mean the difference between safe passage and shipwreck. The historic 1874 telescope still works.
