The story of this place
St Kilda Pier extends 600 metres into Port Phillip Bay and provides one of Melbourne's most photographed sunset compositions. The pier itself creates a leading line towards the city skyline. The historic 1904 kiosk at the pier head provides a warm-toned focal point. The breakwater at the end of the pier hosts a colony of Little Penguins that emerge after dark — photographing them requires high ISO and no flash. The beach below the pier is a popular kite-surfing location, adding human activity. Luna Park's illuminated entrance visible from the pier adds colour. Long exposures turn passing yachts and ferries into light streaks across the bay.
