The story of this place

The drive to West Head through Ku-ring-gai Chase delivers one of the great NSW landscape photography destinations. The lookout platform sits directly above a 100-metre sandstone drop into Broken Bay, with a composition that places estuary channels, island outlines and the distant coastline in layered recession. Golden hour from the west in late afternoon backlights the water channels beautifully. Early morning fog often fills the valley below during autumn and winter, turning the estuary into a sea of cloud. Aboriginal rock engravings of fish, animals and ceremonial designs are found along the 1.5 km Basin Track below the lookout.
