The story of this place
Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park features 270-metre-high sandstone cliffs carved over millions of years, with a 6-kilometre rim walk that provides some of the Northern Territory's most spectacular landscape photography. The walk begins with a steep 500-step climb to the canyon rim, then traverses the edge past weathered sandstone domes known as the 'Lost City'. The 'Garden of Eden' is a permanent waterhole at the base of the cliffs, surrounded by cycads and ferns — a lush oasis contrasting with the arid surrounds. The northern wall catches sunrise light in warm amber tones. The canyon floor provides compositions looking straight up the 270-metre cliff walls.
