The story of this place

Fitzroy Falls plunges 81 metres from the Illawarra Escarpment into Kangaroo Valley in a single dramatic drop, framed by ancient fig trees and temperate rainforest. The main lookout above provides an unobstructed top-down composition. More dramatic is the Yarrunga Creek Track that descends 3 km to the base of the falls — this perspective shows the full height of the plunge with the valley below. Peak flow occurs between June and August after winter rainfall. Long exposures of 2–10 seconds at f/11 produce the classic silky waterfall texture. The tree ferns, moss-covered rocks and ancient Illawarra flame trees in the gorge create rich foreground options.
