The story of this place

Dangar Island sits in the middle of the lower Hawkesbury River, accessible by ferry from Brooklyn, and remains one of the few car-free communities in NSW. The island's waterfront is lined with historic wooden boatsheds, fishing dinghies and remnant mangroves that create outstanding reflective compositions in the still river water. Early morning mist frequently settles on the Hawkesbury during autumn, turning the river scene into a monochromatic dreamscape. The ferry crossing itself — a 10-minute journey through a reach of the Hawkesbury flanked by sandstone cliffs — provides cinematic landscape photography from the boat deck.
