The story of this place

Sherbrooke Forest in the Dandenong Ranges is one of the best locations in Australia to photograph the Superb Lyrebird, a ground-dwelling bird famous for its extraordinary ability to mimic any sound it hears. The forest contains towering Mountain Ash trees (the world's tallest flowering plant), ancient tree ferns and moss-covered logs. Lyrebirds forage on the forest floor in the early morning, kicking through leaf litter. The dim understorey light requires high ISO or a fast lens. The forest is also home to Crimson Rosellas, King Parrots and Eastern Yellow Robins. Grants Picnic Ground has a resident lyrebird population that has become accustomed to human presence.
