The story of this place

Cradle Mountain reflected in Dove Lake is Tasmania's definitive landscape photograph and one of Australia's most recognised natural scenes. The 6km circuit around the lake provides multiple compositions: the classic boat shed reflection from the north shore, the glacier-carved Crater Falls, and the dramatic north face of Cradle Mountain from the south shore. Dawn is essential — the lake is often glass-calm before 9am and the mountain catches first light. Snow on the peaks between June and August adds dramatic contrast. The buttongrass plains surrounding the lake provide foreground texture with golden tones in autumn.
