The story of this place

The Neck is a narrow sand isthmus connecting North and South Bruny Island, flanked by the Tasman Sea to the east and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel to the west. The 208-step climb to Truganini Lookout provides a commanding view of the isthmus with its patterned sand dunes and dual-water composition. The east side shows crashing ocean surf; the west side reveals the calm turquoise channel. Sunrise lights the dunes from behind, creating dramatic silhouette compositions of the vegetation-clad dune ridges. Fairy penguins and shearwaters nest in the sand dunes and can be seen returning at dusk. The Neck Game Reserve protects the penguin colony.
