The story of this place

The Bay of Fires stretches for 50 km along Tasmania's north-east coast, named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 when he saw Aboriginal fires along the beach. The photographic centrepiece is the extraordinary colour contrast between the vivid orange lichen on the granite boulders, the turquoise ocean and the white sand. The best locations are at The Gardens, Binalong Bay and Cosy Corner. The lichen colour is most vivid after rain and in soft overcast light. The boulders provide endless foreground composition options. Early morning light from the east is the preferred direction. The area is also excellent for astrophotography due to minimal light pollution.
