The story of this place
This grand Federation mansion has served as the Sydney residence of the Governor-General since 1913, hosting every visiting British royal and countless heads of state. Built in 1842 as a private residence, it was purchased by the Commonwealth in 1913 for the Governor-General's use. The house sits on the waterfront at Kirribilli, with sprawling gardens that slope down to the harbour. Inside, the reception rooms have witnessed historic meetings between Australian leaders and world figures. When King Charles III visits Australia, this is where he stays.
